How U-Haul Helped Me Move From The Seattle To NYC Dance Scene

I’ve spent the last 6 years living and dancing in Seattle, WA in all its pacific northwest glory. I have loved every moment of my life in Seattle from the artisanal coffee shops, quaint Sunday farmers markets, tight-knit dance community, and lush forest hikes. With all the pros of being based in Seattle, there has always been two major drawbacks.. living so far away from family in my home state of New Jersey and the pull towards NYC. Even though I grew up in the rural farmland slice of Jersey, I was still located in close proximity to the hustle and bustle of NYC. I would commute about 45 minutes into the city a few times a month to attend dance classes at Broadway Dance Center, take workshops with The Rockettes, and see the Broadway shows that I loved so much. As an adult, I didn’t necessarily see myself living full time in NYC because it’s a little too condensed for my liking. After living away from home for so long, the concept of commuting into the city for dance projects and work started to grow on me more and more.

I’ve learned valuable life lessons from my time creating and collaborating with artists in Seattle. I’ve participated in Strictly Seattle, The Bridge Project multiple times, performed in project based works, founded dance company ‘Undercurrent’, taught on faculty at Velocity Dance Center, and performed in my own choreographic solo works. There has been so much depth and joy in forging my own path in the Seattle dance scene, but ultimately felt that I was reaching the end of a chapter. I accomplished many life goals while in Seattle, and I began to envision myself exploring future dance endeavors in a fresh environment. My interests gravitated towards focusing more on creating for social media, commercial work, and reintegrating myself into the NYC dance industry. Overall, it felt like the appropriate time to make my next move.. literally! My boyfriend, DJ, and I made the exciting decision to move back to the east coast and we chose U-Haul to help us along the way!

U-Haul’s U-Box container is a super convenient, no-contact service that drops off one or more storage containers right to your door, then delivers them to your chosen final destination! DJ and I felt that this was the best option for us during this difficult time. The process was simple and straightforward! We ordered one U-Box, which fits about 1.5 rooms, and planned for the container to be delivered three days before our move-out date, giving us plenty of time to pack the U-Box ourselves. Once we packed all our belongings into the U-Box, we arranged for pick-up and went on our way to begin our cross-country road trip to New Jersey! DJ and I have both entrusted U-Haul in the past for previous moves, so we didn’t hesitate using their service once again because we knew they would ship our belongings securely and safely. We were so elated and relieved to not have to deal with the stress or hassle of transporting our belongings across the country ourselves— we were free to enjoy every moment of our trip and take full advantage of sightseeing in the Southwest.

We had selected our drop-off date to time up with the completion of our road trip. DJ and I were pleased that the U-Box arrived safely and in a timely fashion. Unpacking the storage container was easy to do on our own because of the way we initially packed the U-Box from back to front: heavy furniture items and boxes on the bottom, lighter and more fragile items towards the top. We secured all of our belongings with U-Haul’s recommended packing supplies. Using their furniture pads and paper packaging tape really gave us confidence that we could securely pack our boxes and furniture so they wouldn’t shift too much during transport. Great news.. none of our items were damaged or broken! Overall, we had an amazing experience with U-Haul and will definitely use their services in the future for all of our moving needs.
